Because of LED downlight is a great lighting product can create perfect lights indoor, LED downlight becomes one of the most popular LED lighting products. It is widely applied in many places, include hotels, shopping malls, offices, restaurants, commercial places and residential places, etc.

What is a COB LED downlight?

Chip-on-Board or “COB” refers to the mounting of bare LED chips in direct contact with a substrate such as silicon carbide or sapphire to produce an LED array. COB LEDs offer many advantages over older LED technologies, such as surface mount device (“SMD”) LEDs or double in-line package (“DIP”) LEDs.

The COB LED downlight is designed for commercial new construction applications and each version features our high-lumen, high-efficiency COB LED design. The integrated LEDs are combined with dimmable drivers and high-transmission light diffusers to ensure uniform light output. Available options include reflectors and stepped baffles.

COB full name is Chip On Board, refers to the mounting of a bare LED chip in direct contact with a substrate (such as silicon carbide or sapphire) to produce LED arrays. SMD full name is surface mounted diode,The SMD type LEDs are mounted on an aluminum substrate and enveloped in an epoxy resin.

First, the price of SMD downlight is more competitive than COB downlight when they have same wattage. One of main reasons is becasue SMD chip are cheaper than COB chip.

Second, SMD downlight has higher lighting efficiency than COB downlight becasue the SMD chip has high efficiency than COB chip.

Third, SMD downlight has wide beam angle usually. The reason of this is becasue SMD downlight is with many SMD chips, it’s not easy to concentrate the light. So, SMD downlight is good to use at low height indoor area.

SMD downlight

SMD downlight is used worldwide not only becasue of the price is competitive, but also they have high lighting efficiency. They are widely applied in residential places and low height area.

IP44 SMD Downlight

COB downlight

First, COB downlight has more optical options because COB chips have higher “lumen density” than SMD chip, which means COB downlight only need one COB chip. It’s flexible to make COB downlight to have different beam angles by different reflectors. So, COB downlights are able to deliver light to ground when they are install at a high height ceiling.

COB LED Downlight

Second, Currently, LED COB chips have higher quality of light than LED SMD chip, such as higher CRI, lower color tolerance. LED COB chip can reach CRI as high as 97 on market, also COB downlight are required the color tolerance below 3 SDCM (Standard Deviation Colour Matching).

Nowdays, COB downlight not only are applied in residential places but also many commercial places, such as restaurants, hotels and shopping malls, etc. They have many optical options and higher quality of light, also they might be a little more expensive than SMD downlight。

SMD, or “Surface Mounted Device” LEDs, are the most common LEDs in the market. It’s highly popular due to its versatility. You can find it in light bulbs and string lights.

SMD downlights is more efficient than COB downlights because the light source produces higher lumens per watt, which means that they produce more light with a lower wattage. They produce a wider beam of light which is spread over a greater area. This means that less material is needed for the heat sink, which in turn means that they are more economical. The manufacturing procedure to make them is more expensive.

One of the most recent developments in LED, COB downlights or “Chip on Board” technology is a step forward more efficient energy use.

COB downlights provide a better light source. It achieves a more focused light and with the use of reflectors, the light beam can be controlled. Chrome reflectors surrounding the diode can be replaced and set at different angles to make the light beam narrower or wider. Due to the narrow beam and with the use of reflectors that are usually clear, COB downlights generate crisper and cleaner as there is no frosting on the lenses. which cuts down the clarity of the LED light. Due to the clear lenses, more light can penetrate further which means they perform well in rooms with high ceilings.

LEDs have been a very good option for indoor growers. With advancement in LEDs like SMD technology and COB technology, it has just added to its advantages. Both SMD downlights and COB downlights are very good options to go for and both have their own unique advantages and disadvantages. Hence before choosing the lights its important to ascertain the requirement.

Why are COB LEDs so important when running on battery power?

When designing a battery-powered lighting system, there has always been a trade-off between the amount of high-quality lumen output (i.e. brightness) and length of runtime via battery operation. Historically, the more high-quality brightness desired, the shorter the runtime (assuming you are using the same size battery).

However, with the recent development of COB LED technology, this tradeoff has become much less of an issue. For the first time, very low wattage COB LEDs can output extremely high-quality, ultra-bright light. As a result, a relatively small and lightweight lithium-ion battery pack can power a COB LED based light system for very long periods of time.

In fact, our 6W COB LED Trade Show Light will run 14-15 hours using our very small and light weight (1.25lbs) rechargeable Mobile Power Center. High quality light output over extended periods of time using a relatively small battery was simply not possible just a few short years ago!

This is why COB based LED lights were the only real choice we had when designing our ultra-bright, ultra-efficient light systems. As such, Silicon Lightworks exclusively uses COB LED technology in its full line of trade show exhibit lighting.

In summary, chip-on-board LEDs are the latest and most advanced technology on the market today. Simply put, COB LEDs are brighter, consume less power, and output a higher quality beam of light compared to older LED technologies found in most other trade show lighting today. The next time you are in the market for exhibit lighting, insist on COB LED technology!

Benefits:

COB LED downlight has a variety of benefits associated with them. These include:
1. Energy Consumption : LEDs use very little energy compared to other bulb types.
2. No Mercury : Increasingly popular compact fluorescent bulbs actually contain a small amount of mercury. This is a highly poisonous substance which is dangerous to both humans and the environment. LEDs do not contain this material.
3. More Room : One of the biggest advantages to using an LED downlight is that it removes the need for more intrusive illumination. Because an LED downlight normally sits inside a ceiling, there is no need for a lamp or a stand.
4. Safer : Because LEDs produce less heat, they are less likely to affect materials which surround them. This is especially important as a downlight because the light and its fitting are surrounded by plaster, insulation, and other combustible materials found in ceilings.
5. Longer Lasting : LEDs last much long than incandescent and fluorescent alternatives. This means less time opening up ceiling fittings and having to replace them.

Disadvantages

Despite the above advantages, COB LED downlights still have some negatives attached to them which consumers should be aware of. These Include:
1. Lower Light Levels : LEDs often produce lower amounts of light than incandescent and fluorescent sources. This is because the semiconductor material actually traps some of the light inside due to being a solid substance.
2. Short Term Cost : While LEDs will reduce energy bills, they do cost substantially more than other bulb types.
3. Variable Performance : Due to the manufacturing process, LEDs can vary in the amount of light they produce. This is especially true for older bulbs.
4. Poor Light Diffusion : Because downlights are set within a ceiling housing, the light does not spread out in the same way as an ordinary bulb. It cannot escape out of the sides. This means that more lights are required to illuminate one room as opposed to just a single fluorescent or incandescent bulb hanging from the ceiling.

Applications

1. Spot Lights : LED downlights are a great energy saving option for those who want to draw attention to an object or specific area of a room. This is great for highlighting that piece of art on the wall you love, or for creating ambient downlights on a book case, for example.

2. Kitchen Lights : When designing a kitchen, it is well worth considering installing some LED downlights. They can be placed above cooking areas which makes reading recipes and preparing food much easier.

3. Study Areas : Downlights are brilliant for areas where any paperwork or reading will be done.

4. Workshop : A garage or workshop is a perfect place to install downlights as they provide excellent overhead illumination for any project.

5. Atmospheric lighting : LED downlights often work best when used in conjunction with a dimmer switch.

They can create a relaxing atmosphere when used correctly.

COB LED Downlight can be used in a variety of ways and look fantastic when installed correctly. Whether an LED downlight is right for a specific situation or not will be decided by the context, but hopefully the above will assist home and property owners in making the right decision.

A COB light is a type of LED light, with COB standing for Chip-On-Board. COB lights are essentially an array of LED chips that are tightly packed together and bonded to a substrate such as silicon carbide. In effect this creates one large LED chip that has excellent uniformity of brightness, thus making it ideal for photographers and filmmakers.
Chip-on-Board or “COB” refers to the mounting of a bare LED chip in direct contact with a substrate (such as silicon carbide or sapphire) to produce LED arrays. COB LEDs have a number of advantages over older LED technologies, such as Surface Mounted Device (“SMD”) LEDs or Dual In-line Package (“DIP”) LEDs. Most notably, COB technology allows for a much higher packing density of the LED array, or what light engineers refer to as improved “lumen density”. For example, using COB LED technology on a 10mm x 10mm square array results in 38 times more LEDs compared to DIP LED technology and 8.5 times more LEDs compared to SMD LED technology (see diagram below). This results in higher intensity and greater uniformity of light. Alternatively, using COB LED technology can greatly reduce the footprint and energy consumption of the LED array while keeping light output constant. For example, a 500 lumen COB LED array can be many times smaller and consume substantially less energy than a 500 lumen SMD or DIP LED Array.
COB LED Downlight is becoming increasingly popular and for some good reasons, like huge savings on electricity costs,Different colour temperatures for options and Over 35000 hours lifetime. They are welcomed as spot lights, study/work lights and general lights for home or commerical lighting, to replace incandescent bulbs and fluorescent light sources.
